This month we find out if the 93 Rock Talent Search yields any benefits for our local talents. It looks favorable. Katie Arnold-Pedretty or Polygram Records commented, "There are a lot more undiscovered bands in Sacramento than I'd ever thought. After Tesla, you know there's got to be two or three, but there are many more than I expected. A lot of bands are going to be discovered out there. Each band had strengths as well as weaknesses, and I especially liked the fact that for the most part they had different images and different kinds of music."
The Talent Search was videotaped, and Katie will be showing her copy at a meeting of Polygram A& R reps who will decide where to take it from them... A similar procedure will be followed by most of the record companies in attendance.
Gary Briggs of Warner Brothers/Reprise, along with KRXQ'S program director Judy McNutt came up with the idea for a Sacramento showcase while discussing Sacramento talent with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony at the grand opening of Van Halen's new bar in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Gary attended the Talent Search every night, and his sentiments about Sacramento's scene echo Katie's: 'The future is incredible," he says. "I was overwhelmed by the amount of Sacramento bands and their vanity. We got tapes (entries for the talent search) that covered everything from techno-pop to thrash. It was easy to weed out the garage bands, but trying to winnow out the last 60 down to the final 24 featured groups was extremely hard." Garys best picks from the event were Emerald City, Mature Innocence, The Boyz, and 58 Fury. The latter group has Strong Interest from EMI as well.
